Never had Jamison been a speechmaker, but he was pretty good at persuading people of things. That usually took the form of some kind of debate, using facts to make his point. He did not usually include emotional appeals, because emotions were different for everyone. What one person saw as a blessing, the next might see as a curse.
Here, though, he was just talking. He was not trying to persuade Sarah of anything. As he had already said, Sarah had little choice in the matter. They did not need her consent, had not needed it before and would not need it now. They merely preferred that they make things easier with her agreeing to it.
She looked angry as he spoke, which Jamison ignored. Yet as he went on, he noticed the cross look beginning to fade. Had he said something that reached her? He guessed so, since after a brief silence, she spoke, and she was ready to accept the plan, with some modifications.
Now it was Jamison's turn to frown. Her involvement with the plan kind of worked against it, since they were supposed to be keeping her safe. That was the only reason why they were fighting her battles. He would have to talk to Reese and Finch, see how they felt about giving Sarah this demand. They would know better than he would how it would interfere with their plans.
She gave him a few more stipulations, and then thanked him. Jamison could not help smiling softly. "You're welcome," he said, somehow knowing this was all that was needed. No grandiose reply was necessary. It was probably hard for her to acknowledge that she had needed help in the first place. He let the moment pass quietly, tucking it away like a precious gift.
"As for the rest…." Now it was time to get to business. "I can't make any promises. By working with us, you'll be putting yourself in danger, which is exactly what we're trying to avoid. On the other hand, no one knows this case better than you do. I'll mention what you want to the others, and we'll talk about.
"And as for who the others are, there are three of us. No one you would know. One of them drove us here. You'll probably get to meet both of them, but that will have to be later, after this all passes. If you are being watched… we need to protect you but we also can't compromise ourselves. We'd rather remain as anonymous as possible." He gave her another soft smile. "I think you'll understand."
He raised his eyebrows slightly at her. "Does that work for you, or is there anything else?" he asked, figuring she would not be jumping happy about the arrangements he had suggested, but also suspecting she would realize there was only so much leeway they could give, especially, when it came to revealing his two partners. Or bosses.
"I'll tell them I think you should be part of your own case," he added, hoping it would help. "Either way, you'll have full access to your equipment, so I guess we won't really be able to stop you."
